GTA 6 Storage Size on PS5 and Xbox: 3 Ways to Make Room

Updated: November 5, 2026

Whether GTA 6 fits on your console comes down to one number, and it is not the size printed on the box. The official GTA 6 storage size is up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar, and the exact amount depends on your console. What matters is how much of your drive is actually free when preload opens on November 10.

Rockstar’s figure covers PS5 and Xbox Series X|S alike, so plan on the full 212 GB whichever console you own. The sums below show how much room each console starts with. Our three picks are a fast internal drive for PS5, an expansion card for Xbox and a cheap USB drive that holds your older games.

Our Top Picks
Best PS5 Upgrade
Lexar NM790 1TB With Heatsink

Adds a second fast drive inside the PS5 that GTA 6 can run from. The heatsink comes fitted and the read speed clears Sony’s recommendation.

Pros
  • Runs PS5 games from the added drive
  • Heatsink comes attached with no extra parts
  • Read speed clears Sony’s recommended figure
Cons
  • You have to open the console to fit it

Pros
  • Licensed for Series X and Series S
  • Games play directly from the card
  • Adds 2TB of rated storage to either console
Cons
  • The priciest pick of the three

âš¡ Key Takeaways
  • Rockstar says GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB of free space, depending on the console.
  • Your console’s usable space is well below the size on its box. Run the sum before preload opens.
  • Series S owners face the tightest squeeze, with about 152 GB left after the install.
  • A USB drive can hold PS5 and Xbox Series games but cannot run them. GTA 6 needs internal or expansion storage.
  • Leave spare room beyond the base download because patches are more likely to raise the size than lower it.

What We Actually Know About the Download

The GTA 6 download size is now official. Rockstar gave a maximum figure along with the preload dates. Here is what it said, how the earlier report compares and what to plan around.

The GTA 6 Storage Size on PS5

The GTA 6 storage size is up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar, depending on the console. KitGuru’s report on Rockstar’s preload details carries the figure along with the preload times. A long-running tracker of PlayStation file sizes had reported about 210 GB on October 27, as GameRant’s report on the GTA 6 file size covered at the time. The official number landed close to it.

Plan around the full 212 GB rather than a smaller guess. The exact size on your console can come in a little lower, and the store page shows it once preload opens.

Plan around Rockstar’s 212 GB and clear more than that if you can.

What It Means for Xbox

Rockstar’s figure covers Xbox Series X and Series S as well as PS5, with the exact size depending on the console. Plan on the full 212 GB until the Microsoft Store shows the Xbox number.

Xbox and PlayStation sizes can differ too. GameRant points out that Red Dead Redemption 2 needed 99 GB on PS4 and 107 GB on Xbox One at launch. That is why we run every console’s sum against the full 212 GB.

Numbers to Ignore

Other GTA 6 size claims keep circulating. They include older estimates from before Rockstar spoke and screenshots with no traceable source. None of them carry more weight than Rockstar’s own figure, so we leave them out of the sums here.

Why Patches Can Push It Higher

The GTA 6 download is unlikely to stay at its launch size. GameRant expects hotfixes and title updates to change the footprint within weeks of release, more likely up than down. A future online mode could add more.

Clearing exactly 212 GB is cutting it fine for that reason. Free up more than the base figure so a day-one patch does not send you back to the storage menu on launch night.

Run the Sum for Your Console

A console never offers its full advertised capacity because the system software claims part of the drive. The useful sum is simple. Start with your console’s usable space and subtract the games you want to keep. Then see whether GTA 6 still fits.

PS5 and PS5 Slim

The launch PS5 has 667 GB of usable space out of its advertised 825 GB, according to PlayStation Universe’s PS5 Pro storage report. Our math takes off Rockstar’s 212 GB and leaves about 455 GB for everything else on the console.

The PS5 Slim ships with a larger 1TB drive. We could not find a solid usable-space figure for it, so we are not printing one. Open the Storage screen in your console’s settings and use the number it shows. It is more accurate than any article anyway.

PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro has the most breathing room of any console here with 1.89TB usable out of 2TB in the same PlayStation Universe report. Our math leaves about 1.68TB after the 212 GB install, so a Pro owner may not need to buy anything for now.

Xbox Series X

The 1TB Xbox Series X offers 802 GB of usable space, according to Windows Central’s Xbox storage guide. Rockstar’s figure covers Xbox too. At the full 212 GB, our math leaves about 590 GB.

That is comfortable if you keep a handful of big games installed and tight if you keep a dozen. Our Xbox Series X storage expansion guide compares the other ways to add room on that console.

Xbox Series S

The 512 GB Xbox Series S has the tightest squeeze of any console GTA 6 is coming to. It has 364 GB of usable space in the Windows Central guide. At the full 212 GB, our math leaves about 152 GB.

A Series S owner may have to delete some big installs to make that work. The Series S is the one console on this list where an expansion card moves from a nice extra to the practical answer.

At up to 212 GB, GTA 6 would take more than half of a Series S’s usable space.

Three Ways to Add Room Before Preload

Three storage upgrades solve different GTA 6 problems. Only two of them can actually run GTA 6. Pick by your console and by whether you need a place to play the game or just a place to park older ones.

Lexar NM790 With Heatsink for PS5

The Lexar NM790 1TB With Heatsink is the PS5 upgrade to buy if your internal drive cannot hold GTA 6 alongside the games you still play. It is an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4×4 drive with reads up to 7,400 MB/s. That clears the 5,500 MB/s or faster Sony recommends on its PS5 M.2 support page.

Lexar NM790 SSD with a black heatsink on a wooden gaming desk beside an opened PS5, an upgrade for the GTA 6 storage size, with Grand Theft Auto VI on the monitor

Sony requires a cooling structure on any M.2 drive in a PS5. The Lexar NM790 comes with its heatsink attached. Lexar lists the drive as compatible with PS5 at 80 x 24 x 9.7 mm. That sits inside Sony’s overall limits of 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick including the heatsink.

One added drive with the heatsink included, and GTA 6 can run from it.

A fitted M.2 drive also changes how you manage the whole library. Sony lets you move games freely between console storage, USB extended storage and the added M.2 drive. You can decide which games live where after the upgrade.

The Lexar NM790 1TB does ask you to open the console and fit it yourself. That takes a screwdriver and a few careful minutes. The 1TB size holds GTA 6 with plenty left over, but a larger library would fill it faster. Our best SSD for PS5 guide compares more drives if you want a bigger one.

SanDisk Optimus GX C50 for Xbox

The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 2TB is the Xbox pick because it is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and plays games directly from the card. SanDisk’s listing says its performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture. It also supports Quick Resume for jumping between suspended games.

Fitting it is simple because the card slides into the expansion slot on the back of the console. That is a big advantage over a PS5 M.2 drive. The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 works the same way on a Series X or a Series S.

The tradeoffs are cost and track record. The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 is the most expensive pick here and has a much thinner review base than the Seagate Xbox drive. Nothing cheaper in this category was in stock from Amazon or the brand when we looked.

WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive for PlayStation

The WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive for PlayStation 2TB is the budget fix. It works by moving other games out of the way. It is a 2TB portable hard drive made to work with PlayStation that stores your PS5 games, so the console’s internal drive has room for GTA 6.

White external hard drive connected by USB to a PS5 on a light wood console table, freeing the internal drive for the GTA 6 storage size, with a storage menu on the TV

Your PS5 can play PS4 games directly from the WD_BLACK P10. That makes it handy for an older library. PS5 games have to be copied back to internal storage before you can play them. A hard drive moves them more slowly than an SSD does.

Xbox owners get the same parking job from the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 5TB. It is Xbox-certified and works across Series X, Series S and Xbox One. Our PS5 storage expansion guide explains how internal and USB storage split the work on Sony’s console.

A USB Drive Cannot Run GTA 6

A USB drive will not run GTA 6 on a current console. Only a rule change for this one game could alter that, and that is very unlikely. The confusion is common because USB drives work fine for older games.

The PS5 Rule

PS5 games cannot run from USB storage and Sony says so on its USB extended storage support page. You can store them there, but you must copy them back to console storage or a fitted M.2 drive to play. PS4 games are the exception and can run directly from USB.

Sony also asks for a drive of SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster between 250 GB and 8 TB. It must connect directly and never through a hub.

The Xbox Rule

Xbox Series X|S games cannot run from a USB drive. Windows Central’s guide says USB hard drives only store those games and you need to transfer them to the internal SSD or an official expansion card to play. The listing for the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox says the same thing plainly.

USB is a parking lot for PS5 and Xbox Series games and not a place to play them.

Clearing Space Without Buying Anything

Making room for GTA 6 costs nothing if your library can spare it. Start with the Storage screen in your console’s settings. It lists your installs by size, so look at the biggest ones first.

Windows Central’s Xbox guide notes that new releases from franchises like Call of Duty, Halo and NBA 2K now pass 100 GB. A couple of those installs can free most of the 212 GB GTA 6 download. A big install you have not touched in months is the obvious candidate, and you can download it again later.

Check your saves before you delete anything. Games usually keep progress separate from the install. It is still worth confirming your save data is backed up for anything you care about finishing.

If your problem is deciding how much storage you need in the long run, our 512GB vs 1TB vs 2TB SSD comparison walks through how those sizes hold up against a real game library.

Move Games Instead of Deleting Them

A USB drive turns deleting into moving. That matters if your internet is slow or capped. Sony’s support page suggests moving games you have finished or have not played in a while to USB extended storage and copying them back when you want to play again.

Moving games back and forth takes time on a hard drive, so do it before preload rather than the night before launch. Xbox works the same way with a USB drive. A big library can sit on the Seagate Game Drive for Xbox 5TB until you want those games again.

Clear the Space Before Preload Opens

Clearing space for GTA 6 early gives you the full preload window. Preload opens on November 10 on both consoles, nine days before the November 19 launch. PS5 downloads start at midnight local time and Xbox at midnight GMT, which is the evening of November 9 in the US. A download this size will take a while on most home connections.

If your console runs out of room partway through, you lose time sorting that out while the rest of the window ticks away. Start the clear-out a few days before November 10. Then check the store listing that morning for the exact size on your console.

Which Fix Matches Your Console

Your console decides the GTA 6 storage fix because each one has a different starting point and a different slot. Find your console in the first column and follow the row across.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on the GTA 6 storage size and how to make room for it.

How big is GTA 6 going to be?

Up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar, depending on your console. That is close to the 210 GB a PlayStation file-size tracker reported in October. Patches after launch are more likely to raise the size than lower it, so plan on clearing more than the base number.

Is the Xbox version of GTA 6 the same size?

Rockstar’s figure of up to 212 GB covers Xbox Series X and Series S as well as PS5, and the exact size depends on the console. Red Dead Redemption 2 differed in size between consoles. Plan on the full 212 GB and check the Microsoft Store listing once preload opens.

Will a physical copy save me the download?

Plan on the full download either way. Physical copies of GTA 6 reportedly hold a code for the digital download with no disc in the box, according to pre-order details Rockstar sent to press. The game comes through the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store and needs the full amount of storage on your console.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external drive?

Not from a USB drive. PS5 games and Xbox Series games must run from internal storage or a supported upgrade. On PS5 that means an M.2 SSD such as the Lexar NM790. On Xbox it means an expansion card such as the SanDisk Optimus GX C50. A USB drive can still hold your other games.

Is 1TB of added storage enough for GTA 6?

Yes, with room to spare. A 1TB drive like the Lexar NM790 holds the 212 GB download several times over. That leaves space for updates and other large games. A 2TB drive only makes sense if you keep a big library installed at once.
